Star Fishing

I wrote the story Star Fishing when I was pregnant with my twin boys. I knew then that I wanted to create a picture book for them and I wanted it to feel a little bit magic and almost like a myth. It took me another two years to start illustrating and hundreds of hours and many many versions and attempts before I was happy with the direction it was headed.

I illustrated the whole book by hand. It’s a combination of pencils, pen, watercolour, gouache, alcohol ink and collage.
The story is about the stars in the sky falling down to earth.

The story lends itself to a limited colour palette, the whites and yellows standing out against the dark blues.
There are some red accents picked out too but primarily the paintings are all dark blues.

After the stars fall to earth and crash into the ocean, people come together to help save them. A mother and her children set out in their little red boat to save the stars and are joined by many other people, all wanting to help.
